Unusual Finds: The Bizarre Side of House Hunting

The Weird & Wonderful

Our New Series

Welcome to our new series, where we share the lighter side of our property journey. As we explore countless homes, we often stumble across unexpected quirks, oddities, baffling DIY fixes and surprises that make us pause, smile, or scratch our heads.

This series is about bringing those moments to you, so you can enjoy the unusual discoveries alongside us.

Arrested Development

During a recent viewing, we spotted a rather unexpected feature.

A premium-grade pair of handcuffs securely fastened to the bannister. Not the novelty kind……these are the real deal.

The vendor confirmed there’s no key, so the lucky new owner inherits them as a complimentary fixture, free with the purchase. It certainly redefines the concept of ‘the naughty step’, don’t you think?

Jungle House: Halloween Edition

It was Halloween night. We viewed a property with no electricity

This place had been empty for two years, and the online photos…. Let’s just say, they were not recent. We could barely find the front door through the wilderness.

With our big pants on, we ventured in. We encountered free thrills, courtesy of nature and a few squatters who’d clearly made themselves at home. There were huge black spiders and an overgrown jungle for a front and rear garden.

But the real twist was that outside was growing in. This is a house that had slowly become part of the landscape it sits in.

Perfectly eerie. Accidentally immersive.

Frankenstein’s Designer

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, another property pops up that leaves you muttering: Why?!

We recently viewed an auction house listed as a “2-bed.” The online photos were intriguing enough to spark our curiosity, so off we went.

Here’s what greeted us:

  • The shower or bath? Naturally, the bath had been plonked into the built-in wardrobe of the main bedroom, boxed off with a stud wall.
  • The landing cupboards in front of the stairs had been converted into a toilet and sink, with nothing but a curtain for privacy.

In short, the bathroom had been dismantled and scattered across storage spaces, all in the name of squeezing out an extra bedroom.

How or why anyone thought this deserved to be marketed as a 2-bed is beyond comprehension. Sometimes property “creativity” really does cross into Frankenstein territory.

Curious about what we do or want to connect? Let’s start the conversation.
